The undergraduate course offers a basic introduction to the everyday issues and scientific use of arguments with an introduction to formal and informal methods of analysing argumentations. It examines case studies taken from realistic scenarios and surveys a variety of topics from standard logic, argumentation and critical thinking. The course discusses issues from the point of view of argumentation and formal analysis in various fields as well as from the point of view of rhetoric and critical thinking. The topics covered give an introduction to core concepts and connect recent contributions that explore contemporary approaches to analysing everyday discourses and theoretical works. Apart from familiarizing the student with the established theories and key concepts in logic and argumentation theory, the course also provides practical training that enables students to analyse complex arguments with the help of various different tools.


Week 1

Introduction: What is an argument? How to reconstruct an argument? What is the analysis of arguments are good for? The difference between logic, rhetoric and dialectics.

Week 2

Reconstructing arguments I.: basic logic, validity, the notion of proposition, premises and the importance of formal representation of arguments.

Week 3

Reconstructing arguments II.: Propositions and arguments, Basic propositional logic and connectives

Week 4

Reconstructing arguments III.: Truth tables and transformation trees. Preparation for the study of validity.

Week 5

Validity and summary: Argumentation schemes validity and fallacies.

Week 6

Test: Reconstructing basic arguments and attributing validity.

Week 7

Introduction to proof theory: Proof trees, validity and reconstructing valid forms of arguments.

Week 8

Conditionality: Truth and assertibility, possibilities, relevance

Week 9

Natural Deduction: Conjunction, disjunction, negation;

Week 10

Test (20 min) and Vagueness: the problem of equivocation and how to analyze vague sentences, problem of bivalence, non-denoting terms, presupposition failure, future contingents

Week 11

Informal Logic I: Argumentation schemes and relevance.

Week 12

Informal Logic II: Argument diagramming and dialogues.

Week 13

Informal Logic III: Dialogues
